FAQ
D-Mannose
D-Mannose is another high-quality supplement for UTI prevention from Utiva that specifically targets E.coli. We recommend it when someone has complicated recurrent UTIs or has trigger-associated UTIs (such as sex, swimming, travel, etc). It is recommended to take at least 2,000 mg daily of D-Mannose.
Utiva/UTI Control is a clinically proven cranberry extract that binds to most bacteria, including E.coli. PACs are the bioactive molecules of the cranberry and are recommended by physician guidelines. Utiva UTI Control is a simple, small, once-a-day pill taken for daily support of the urinary tract to prevent ongoing UTIs. PACs are also the antioxidant of the cranberry and provide other gut health benefits.
For those patients with chronic UTIsand are looking for a stronger approach to prevention, we recommend taking both Utiva UTI Control and D-Mannose.
Preliminary research shows that when adding D-Mannose to the 36 mg of PACs, there is a significant reduction in anti-adhesion activity, thereby reducing its efficacy. As a result, we recommend taking UTI Control and D-Mannose separately. Our suggestion is to separate these supplements by at least 2-3 hours for optimal results. An easy way for patients to keep track is to take D-Mannose in the morning and PACs at night!
Side effects of D-Mannose may include bloating and loose stools. If your patient has diabetes, D- Mannose supplements should be used with caution as they may make it harder to control blood sugar. High doses of D-Mannose may also cause kidney damage.
D-Mannose is similar in shape to receptors on the urinary tract wall. These receptors fit perfectly within E.coli’s type 1 fimbriae. When D-Mannose is present in sufficient amounts, it can bind to all the E.coli fimbriae and inhibit bacterial adhesion to the urothelium, reducing the risk of infection.
